Got Scalp Buildup?

Have you found yourself finally getting a handle on your haircare journey only to find yourself still dealing with Scalp Build-up? Not to worry! This article has you covered with 7 different all-natural remedies to help fight even the toughest of cases.

Why Scalp Buildup?

Scalp buildup can occur for a few different reasons. Consistently adding products directly to the scalp without fully removing the products when washing. Using co-washes on wash day instead of a good clarifying shampoo. Some skin conditions such as eczema, Seborrheic (seb-o-REE-ik) dermatitis, and psoriasis. Overproduction of dead skin on the scalp.

No matter why you find yourself dealing with it, however, it can be easily (and naturally) fixed by one or multiple of the below natural scalp rinses. (There are many products on today’s market that include some of these products, however, they usually include an array of other products that may not be the best for sensitive scalps). This can get a bit tricky. That is why we put together a list of 7 all-natural hair rinses using ingredients you probably already have at home and that you can easily double-check the health benefits on your own.

Here are 7 tips for naturally removing that dreaded scalp buildup:

1. Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse:

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is an excellent natural remedy for removing scalp buildup. It helps to rebalance the pH of the scalp, clarify the hair follicles, and dissolve product residue. To use ACV as a rinse, mix equal parts of ACV and water in a container. After shampooing your hair, pour the mixture over your scalp, ensuring that it reaches all areas. Massage it into your scalp using your fingertips for a few minutes to help break down the buildup. Leave it on for a couple of minutes, allowing the ACV to work its magic, and then rinse thoroughly with water. ACV also has antibacterial and antifungal properties that can help combat dandruff and scalp infections.

2. Baking Soda Scrub:

Baking soda is a gentle exfoliant that can effectively remove product residue, excess oil, and dead skin cells from the scalp. To create a baking soda scrub, mix 1-2 tablespoons of baking soda with enough water to form a paste. Wet your hair, apply the paste to your scalp, and gently massage it in using circular motions. Pay special attention to areas where you notice buildup. Baking soda helps to break down the buildup and exfoliate the scalp. After massaging for a few minutes, rinse your hair thoroughly with water to remove the baking soda. Since baking soda can be drying, it’s important to follow up with a moisturizing conditioner to restore the hair’s natural balance.

3. Tea Tree Oil Treatment:

Tea tree oil is well-known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, making it a great natural remedy for scalp issues and buildup. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with a carrier oil such as coconut oil or olive oil. The carrier oil helps dilute the tea tree oil to prevent any potential irritation. Massage the mixture into your scalp, focusing on areas with buildup or irritation. Tea tree oil helps to cleanse the scalp, reduce inflammation, and remove excess oil and product residue. Leave the treatment on for 15-30 minutes to allow the oil to penetrate the scalp, and then rinse your hair thoroughly. Tea tree oil can be quite potent, so use it in moderation and avoid applying it directly to the scalp without dilution.

4. Scalp Scrub with Sea Salt:

Sea salt is a natural exfoliant that can help remove dead skin cells, excess oil, and product buildup from the scalp. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of fine sea salt with a carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil to create a scalp scrub. Wet your hair, apply the scrub to your scalp, and gently massage it in using circular motions. Focus on areas where buildup is most noticeable. Sea salt helps to physically exfoliate the scalp, promoting better circulation and removing debris. Rinse your hair thoroughly afterward and follow up with a conditioner to replenish moisture.

5. Lemon Rinse:

Lemon juice contains natural acids that can help dissolve scalp buildup and clarify the scalp. Squeeze the juice of one lemon and mix it with water in a container. After shampooing your hair, pour the lemon mixture over your scalp and massage it in using your fingertips. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the lemon juice to break down the buildup, and then rinse your hair thoroughly with water. Lemon juice also has a refreshing and invigorating effect on the scalp.

6. Scalp Brushing:

Regularly brushing your scalp with a soft-bristle brush or a scalp massager can help stimulate blood circulation, loosen dead skin cells, and remove buildup. Before shampooing, use the brush or massager to gently massage your scalp in circular motions. This process

helps dislodge any accumulated product residue, oils, and debris from the scalp, allowing for a more effective cleanse. Brushing also helps distribute natural oils from the scalp to the hair strands, promoting healthier hair growth.

7. Diluted Shampoo:

If you notice excessive buildup on your scalp, diluting your shampoo with water can help ensure a more thorough cleanse. Mix your regular shampoo with water in a separate container before applying it to your hair. The diluted mixture can help break down and remove buildup more effectively. When shampooing, focus on massaging the scalp with the diluted shampoo to dislodge any buildup, and then rinse thoroughly with water.

Remember the key to healthy hair is a healthy scalp! Listen to your scalp and adjust the frequency of these treatments based on your hair’s needs. While these natural remedies can be effective in removing scalp buildup, it’s important not to overdo them, as excessive exfoliation or drying ingredients can cause scalp irritation and shedding. Find the right balance and incorporate these treatments into your regular hair care routine to maintain a healthy scalp and promote overall hair health.
